Swimming Lessons - wearing goggles

Children are welcome to wear goggles during their swimming lessons if the following conditions are met:

  • The child must be able to put the goggles on correctly/safely so as to prevent any impact eye injuries. The correct method is detailed below.  Staff will not put goggles on to children nor will they help in anyway so as to avoid causing these injuries.  By being able to fit and remove goggles themselves is the safest way for children to wear their goggles.  (Adults will happily help with adjustments of the straps on goggles but only when they are not being worn.)
  • The child must at no time interfere with someone else’s goggles. If they do, they will be asked to leave the lesson immediately.
  • The child must keep their goggles on for the entire time they are in the water. If they remove their goggles in the water they must leave the water and only refit their goggles on the poolside – it is not safe to fit goggles whilst in the water.
  • Goggles must not be lifted up onto the forehead and then returned to the face. This is not the safe way of fitting goggles.
  • Generally, children taking their first steps to being water confident should not wear goggles as part of the early learning process is being able to cope with water on the face. For this reason children in armbands during our swimming lessons are asked not to wear goggles. (Your child will be provided with armbands in the lesson if we feel they are necessary).

Fitting and removing goggles

  • Grip the goggles by the edges of the eyecups.
  • Press the goggles against your eyes.
  • Guide the strap up and over your head whilst keeping the goggles gently pressed to your eyes with one hand.
  • When removing goggles, pull the strap over your head from the back to remove the goggles.  Ie: Don’t try to remove your goggles by pulling on the eyecups. If you’re not careful, they could snap back and hit you in the face/eyes.
