Spelling

At Maidwell Primary we encourage the ‘right/write from the start’ approach to spelling.

We believe that if a child can read a word, they should usually be able to spell it.

From Reception onwards parents are asked to help children learn to read/write high frequency words and those words as determined by the National Curriculum word lists.

In order to support children when writing in the classroom personal dictionaries are used.

These are available below to download for use at home and are helpful as they contain age-related expectations with regard to spelling.

Each year group has their own dictionary which features coloured words on the top of various pages.

These coloured words relate to word groups that are already familiar to the children.
