Reading gives children a gift that enriches their lives. At Maidwell, we work hard to ensure all learners have this point of vantage so that they can fulfil their potential through developing their minds. We are passionate that every pupil who leaves our school has the opportunity to develop a love of reading. This love of reading does not have to be limited to fictional stories either. We often have children who soak up non-fiction books and poetry as well.
Learners who read a lot find it easier to concentrate – they can sit, listen and think. This is because reading gives you abstract thought – the ability to think of things that aren’t in front of you. Reading builds your imagination: as soon as you start reading to children, they start exercising their imagination – picturing what is being said in their heads. And, of course, it gives them a wide vocabulary – up to 90% of vocabulary is encountered in reading and not in everyday speech (Ofsted Education Inspection Framework – overview of research).
At Maidwell Primary School we believe that reading is the key which opens the door to all learning.
Just as important is the development of a love of stories and books, and in order to do this the children are immersed in stories and books throughout the year.
